What are your perceptions of material wealth/money? What is "wealth"? Do we see too much excess today? If your financial status a reflection of how successful you are? Are we always wanting more? Do we "want" too much? Is being content or fulfilled enough? When is enough, enough?

  1. I think how one flaunts and shows there money is a direct reflection of who they are as a person, its not necessarily how much someone makes it just shows what they see as important in life. Wealth is a state of mind; to change your life from poverty to wealthy, all you need to do is change your mind set. I believe, most wealth is acquired is to gain status. You want to spend money, not just to obtain the material objects, but to signal to everyone else that you have the power to obtain them. We see people today who are never happy with what they have and just want more, more, more. Success is also a state of mind it shown through accomplishments not financial status, someone could do something that provided no income to themselves but could still reflect complete success in there life like acts of charity. It has always been said that having money and being wealthy doesn't make one happy. When someone tries to buy what they think will make them happy they never end up being happy they just end up wanting more, expecting happiness from the things they get but never finding it but gaining greed which is wanting too much.Being content is enough but in today's society enough is never really enough it seems like.

  2. I agree with Janelle, I really agree with the part that today’s society play a HUGE role in people and what type of person people are. I also agree that money plays a big role in a reflection of which people are. For example when people (like me) see poor people and don't give them the same chance, well the fact is that they might have just done through a rough time but are just as capable as us. I don't think you can ever "want" too much. I say this because by wanting more it just gives you something to work for. I do how ever think there is a line that should be set with the wants people have. For example people that have the money to just keep getting should stop and realize how lucky they have and try to help people that aren’t as lucky. In my opinion I enjoy being content, because being raised like this is relaxing. I learn how to save my money so I will have something to fall back on. I don't know when enough is "enough’’ think it is a personal choice.

  3. I believe that wealth is in the eye of the beholder. There are certain things that one would consider to make a person wealthy that are completely unimportant to someone else. For me wealth is about fulfillment. To be at peace with one self and truly happy with your own character. It is when that fulfillment is achieved that you can create bigger and better things around you, such as finding a good job, a significant other, start a family; all of which contribute to fulfillment. I don't believe that we want too much because without a desire to "get" and to "have" there would be no reason to challenge yourself and no reason to exist. Enough is enough when people's desires contradict their true character as a human being, if people are good then being greedy or self centered would be this point. As far as money it is not a measure of your worth unless that is how you choose measure your success. Money is a bonus to A) what you do to truly earn it. B) your goals when earning it.

  4. Personally, money today is everything. It doesn't matter how you look at money or what your opinions on it are, the facts are that money is the most powerful thing in our world. Everything that is important in our world revolves around money from labor, land, materials, to even happiness for some people. I make as much cash at my job as possible to open doors that I would have never explored before if i had no money. Although it is important in life, there is a great excess in wealth especially in america. I mean look at our war spending and some of the houses people are buying, although they are nice, they are a little excessive. People need to learn to spend their money in a way to improve their value of life rather then flaunt their extra cash. People also greatly measure their success by how much cash they have, which is true. The more money you have, the harder you wroked for it. Unless you are a lottery winner or something like that then it's different but in todays society success is measured by wealth.

If you can make the money why wouldn't you? All the fundamental ideas America is founded on are based on money and self improvment, the advancement of the american dream. IPersonally, money today is everything. Although it is important in life, there is a great excess in wealth especially in America. individual prosperity and advancement is important and we would get no where without the competition that is based around money. No products would get better, no cars would be faster, everything would just be mediocre without money and everything that it drives.

  5. Money is a powerful thing that has contorl over many people. I think that having money is somthing that many people directly put together with being happy. Now a days people glamourize money and the things you can buy with it which then makes kids belive that they can only be successful in life if they make money and get material items they can show off. I also think that many people spend there lives so foucused on getting the next big thing, or getting this or getting that, that these people never take the time to just enjoy living and enjoy being with love ones and friends. I think that too often know a days all we do is want and we dont ever just be satisfied with what we already have. But the fact of the matter is there are people who never have enough.

As far as what is wealth, i really agree with lauren saying that wealth is in the eye of the beholder. Its so true because to be honest i would really like to make alot of money, but i will be happy with just having a loving family and an honest living. So to me wealth is love and having a family and it's not nessecarrily about how big my house is or how nice of a car i drive.

  6. I agree with Ian, in that, unfortunately, money is everything. Money is the key to unlock the box of power. It can influence people into doing things they would otherwise not do. Everything in our world is focused on money. It makes life easier to some extent. Yes, it is easier to pursue your dreams with money, and yes, having money can get you any materialistic thing you want. It's hard to imagine a time or life without money. Would people be less hungry for power? Would people have the want to be more "successful" than anyone else? Would competition be such a big part of our life? Unfortunately, we are so wrapped up in our desire for money, we fail to see the real importance in life. America is a country that is based on excess. A family MUST have 2 or more cars, numerous TVs and computers, updated houses, and new technology, even though the old "stuff" worked just fine. We "need" to have more of everything, we "need" to impress others with our posessions, we "need" to have the finest of everything. Second best is just not an option for us. I would personally love to live in a world where money didn't exist, just because it shows the worst side of people.

  7. I think media plays a huge role on material wealth and money. We see material possessions that we don’t necessarily need, but media is such big influences that we give in and decide we do need those products. Wealth as I see it is someone who is rich and doesn’t have to work hard in life. They live the easy life. We see way to much excess mainly from celebrities who live in mansions and drive luxury cars. I think our financial status is a huge reflection on a person. If you see a person driving an Audi you assume they live a pretty good life. People always want more, greater and better things come out and we strive to get the latest and greatest. I think people trying to be content or fulfilled only last a short time, people want the hottest new product and will spend lots of money to get it.

  8. "Add not to a man's desires, but lessen his desires. Contentment comes from desiring less. Material things can be distracting; it leads us into temptation. Having so much leads to discontentment." When Lauren said, "I don't believe that we want too much because without a desire to 'get' and to 'have' there would be no reason to challenge yourself and no reason to exist." There are a lot of thoughts flying around in my head when I read this, so I'm going to try and catch the ones that I feel I can express clearly.... I understand where Lauren is coming. What she says here reminds me of that saying that goes, "Take your piece of the world". But my thought is, do our wants distract us from what is truly important? People are selfish- our wants are self-centered. Yes, we live in a wolrd that is "every-man-for-himself". We get too caught up in this twisted dream of success. The world has told itself that is NEEDS this, or it NEEDS that, and it has actually gotten to the point where it would be hard to get along in this world if you did not conform to its ways. But as a general fact of this world: People are ALWAYS wanting more. People search for instant happiness. It's as if people aren't actaully happy. They live everyday with this addiction of quick fixes to "happiness". The most popular quick fix: money. But money doesn't make you happy! The people of this world are the greatest proof of that. The way I see it, money is just a factor. It is something man invented so that he may gain a sense of control. Man worships money! It is nothing worth of praise! That is when enough is surely enoug; When man obsesses himself with the idea of money and the false fulfillment he gets from it. That is when he has gone too far. Money is just a means of living in this world. It is not the reason for our existance. To me, that just seems elementary.

  9. Material wealth can be extremely useful in this world when the material has utility; food, gold, steel, computers, firearms, and books are all examples of items that can actually be useful. Certain types of material wealth, however, are disgustingly wasteful; for example, the many $1,000-minimum designer purses (which only have merit, it seems, in having a different tag than the next hideous rag), $60,000 cars (which break down within five years), and expensive interior decorator designs (many of which have a most distinct lack of taste). Physically speaking, money is just paper with magnetic ink, which is vulnerable to the convoluted whims of some bureaucracy. It's only value is as a means unto an end, as it can be used to acquire that which is actually useful, which could be anything from food to votes.

Wealth is the sum of one's possessions, material or intellectual. Things like gold and silver are obviously considered wealth, but wisdom, intelligence, and strength of character are equally, if not more, valuable.

We see far too much excess today. We are in an economic recession, but there are those who seem to have ignored the fact. Fairly recently, the CEO of one of the companies that had taken government bailout money used approximately $3 million to remodel his office. Incredibly expensive designer clothes appear to still be selling (see my above rant). What a waste.

Financial status might or might not be a good indicator of one's success. If one aspires to be the next Rockefeller, then financial success would certainly be a good indicator of success. If, however, one's ambition is to become a Buddhist monk, money would be irrelevant.

To want more is common, but only so long as gaining is satisfying. We want too much when we want more than is good for, or useful to, us, which appears to be common (see above). If one is content and fulfilled, there is no need to acquire anything else; in other words, it is enough. I agree with "nick R" in that it is a personal choice as to when 'enough' is enough, because 'enough' is enough when one is fulfilled and content. Some have very simple conditions for satisfaction, while others have conditions that will never be met.

  10. My perceptions of money and wealth is not that important. I think it is great to have enough money to survive, but so many people in this world just want to be rich and selfish. There are so many people in this world that need our help and what do most Americans do? We sit around watching T.V. and eating. Some of us have no care about others around the world. I also think some guys in this world think they have to be really rich in order to impress a girl and maybe it's just me but I think that is so dumb! Girls should be liking a guy for his heart and not his money! I do agree with Janelle that the way people act with their money towards others shows who they truly are as a person. And unfortunatley many Americans do flaunt their money and that's why many countries see us as very selfish and it is so true. I think many of us are always wanting more. But why can we not want more for others? Imagine how different the world would be if everyone wanted something for someone else and not just themselves? Why can we not accept the beautiful things God already blessed us with? We should be thanking him, not asking for more, more, more.

  11. I think wealth is whatever a person perceives it to be. We have grown up with the impression that the more money you have, the more wealthy you are. But I think that changes as you grow older, and gain a better understanding of how life works. To me being “wealthy” means being surrounded by people or things that help you live a purpose driven life. I don’t agree that one’s financial status is a reflection of one’s success, because whatever someone chooses to do, just may not pay that much, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be a success in that profession.
I agree that we often “want” much more than we need, I know that I am guilty of this because I’ve been to a buffet and by the time I’m done I’ve got food coming out of my ears and I’ve still got half a feast left on my plate. I don’t think material “things” can fulfill a person, because if that were true, people would sit in their fancy car in the garage of their fancy house and be completely content, but that’s not how it is. It is human nature to want but it is also human nature to want something that cannot be materially possessed; we need it. What that is varies depending on what it is that you need.

  12. I think that it is really lame how people are looked down upon for not having as much money as others. It saddens me to see that people only care about having success. The bible says “For what is a man profited if he gains the world and loses his soul?” When I read this scripture it makes me ask the question, is having success and money all that really matters? Shouldn’t we strive to be something better than that? Wouldn’t it be better to have law abiding citizens with impeccable character who work their hardest every day at work? That is a goal that I am going to strive for everyday of my life. However, say someone works really hard and they are fortunate enough to get a lot of money should they be put into this “rich” group that is “better than everyone else”? I think that once someone gets a taste of the goods and the success that it is natural for them to want more and more. Nevertheless, if a person were to control that natural instinct to be greedy then perhaps they will be more successful. I have heard stories about people who are extremely rich yet they have an empty feeling inside and they want more of something, and most of the time they don’t really know what that “something” is. I don’t even know what that something is but I think that the people who aren’t rich contain it. Maybe it’s compassion, or patience, or maybe even peace. If someone has a job they love, supports their family, gives to charity, and has good self-esteem is he not successful? Overall I think that it is more important to find something of importance to strive after and to not get greedy but stay patient.

  13. My perception of material wealth/money is that the desire to acquire this type of wealth takes away from what truly matters in life. People spend too much time and energy worrying about acquiring more money and material wealth, when I believe that there are many things in life that are way more important than money. I totally agree with what Hanna said, “They live everyday with this addiction of quick fixes to "happiness". The most popular quick fix: money. But money doesn't make you happy!” I believe that in this regard there is too much excess today, people that spend thousands of dollars on an outfit or a pair of shoes. Money will never buy a person happiness, it will just make them feel better about themselves for a short period of time until they realize how unfulfilled their life truly is. I believe that too much of almost anything could be a bad thing, it is important to have balance in life. I don’t however believe that there is a lot more excess today than there was a thousand years today. The rich will always have excess material wealth and money; it is just a fact of life. I believe that most people are almost always wanting more because it is hard to see how blessed you are until you look at yourself from somebody else’s eyes. A person can always find someone that has more of something in their life, which will a lot of the time cause that person to want more. I believe that if a person can be content with what they have right now, then they are very blessed. One of my goals in life is to eventually get to the point in my life where I am content with what I have. I don’t think that it is an easy thing to do, but someone that is content with their life is truly successful.

  14. Money is merely a medium of exchange for services and goods. So, why is it so highly valued in today’s society? Of course I realize it essential to exchange goods and what not, but why does the media and society lead us to believe that money buys happiness? I think money and greed is a vicious cycle of wants that leads to nothing in the end. While greed can motivate in moderation, it destroys in excess. Corporations don’t want us to be content, because that would lead to fewer profits for their latest and greatest products. I agree with Kelly and Ian that unfortunately money is everything and we just need to be smart enough to realize when enough is enough.

  15. I agree with Eric, I believe that money is a possession that takes away from ourselves and what truly matters in our lives. I think that unfortunately people do judge others or whether or not they want to associate themselves with others based on financial status and class. I personally do not agree that wealth and status is important however, we live in a society where everything is based upon these aspects. I think we want more and more with the media and advertisments we buy unnesesary things that aren't vital to live, and half the time we use these materials for a while and then get bored and want the new and best thing. I think that it's okay to want money and possessions, but enough is enough when you get to the point where you just buy everything even if you don't really need it. Money, wealth and materials do not define you as a person and when we make these characteristics our main aspects in life is when our society has gone too far.

  16. Now a days money is the most important possession a person can obtain. It definitely takes us away from the more important things in life, such as family. People tend to obsess constantly over money and can become greedy with it, causing broken relationships or a life of suffering. Like Eric said, money will never buy a person happiness, it will only make them feel satisfied temporarily. Soon, they will feel unfulfilled and this cycle of buying and spending will keep repeat. Life wasn't supposed to be like this. I think it is hereditary for people to always want more. It is just how the human race is. Of course people would love you have the newest and best thing out there, but is it really necessary? Enough is enough is when you finally realize you are losing everything or everyone in your life, for money. Our society has gone too far with the whole idea of "wealth" and I doubt it will stop,

  17. I would have to agree with Ian on this one, money is everything. Money is a material item that everyone wants countless amounts of. Many people think that the more money they have the more successful they are, and that they are better than you. It is human nature to always want money or anything we don’t already have. Based on wants vs needs majority of people will always want more money or any other material item to try and out do others. I also agree with Janelle, how a person flaunts their money is a direct reflection of the kind of person they are. This is most of the time true, there are people out there who have the money and make it apparent while others have the money but play it down and are very generous. Also, I think we see some excess when it comes to wealth. Everyone is always trying to be better than one another by buying the bigger house, the faster car, and nicer clothes. Life isn’t a competition about what you drive, where you live, or what you wear, it’s about how you share your voice and make the world a better place.

  18. Personally I believe that everyone thinks that money is everything; money is by far the most powerful thing in our society. Money can do so many things for people, both good and bad. I believe that money is the most influential thing in the universe. To me wealth is having money and being successful at what you do. Wealth is about spending as much money as you can to prove that you are powerful. Yes, I do believe that we do see a lot of excess today, people are spending money only for the purpose of spending money. Your financial status in today’s world is everything. Success is measured by how much money you make, not how well you do your job. Everybody wants more than they have. It’s human nature to want what we don’t have. Yes, I think that people do want to much; some people go overr the top to get what they want. Yet they still want more. To me, being fufilled is enough, I would be fine with a good paying job, a house and a family. As long as I couyld support all of that and still have some money left over I would be happy. I believe that enough is enough when your happy with your material possessions.

  19. People are very focused on the present. They see what they have right now and think that that defines them. What defines you is more than your wealth or economic status. People want what they want right now. They have to have the newest and coolest products on the market. If you had all the materialistic things in the world and nothing else I feel that you would be missing something in your life, an emptiness. You would be lonely with only things. there is more to life than just the high tech advanced items. I agree with Lauren, in that wealth is in the eye of the beholder. Someone who had nothing, but they have a dinner might consider themselves wealthy. Each person has their own idea of what makes them wealthy, for some its money, or things, for some its friends and family. You define how wealthy you are, your wealth does not define you.

  20. Some say that money is the seed of all evil. And at the surface level, it can appear so. But i think that greed is the seed of all evil. Nowadays, as pathetic as it is, money gets you things. Money can give you the ability to purchase something that 300 years ago you would have had to make by hand. And with that ability to get, and easily get with an excess of money, a person can start to want more. Greed is what drives the desire, pushes a person over the edge. So many wars and conflicts have been because a country or patch of land would look good on a map, and somebody wants to call it theirs. When a person gets somethin, it was getting it that makes them feel successful, not having it. Once you have it, its not the same, so you need to get something else. And the cylce never ends unless you have the ability to say; that is enough. Every person says for themselves when they have enough, because every person is in charge of themselves. But, hopefully, each person can carry a heart and mind courteous enough lend to those who do not have enough, those who obviously need more. Such as starving individuals in Africa, or peoples on indian reservation recieving little or no help from the government. A huge roadblock in a person saying 'I have enough", is man kinds inate neccessity to strive. People have to feel like they are getting stronger; in any context you want to put that word. People naturally want to get better. In a world surrounded by money and practiaclly run off money, where 99% of us need it, what better way than make money get rich and keep getting richer?.. or atleast some would say. Personally,i think money is fake. A false representation of success in the eyes of one who sees it as success. All, absolutly all needs of man and the world to survive and live comfertably can be found and created;without money! The thing is people nowadays are not nearly self sufficient enough to do so. Money is the easy way out, almost the cowards way out, to surviving. How many can hunt a deer, build the materials neccasary to kill that deer, make a fire to cook it? Build a shelter to stay warm? boil water over the fire to cleanse your water? Locate a stream or river, know your cardinal directions like the back of your hand? All are completly possible, entirly possible for any of us to learn and use to survive. But, why depend on yourself? thres money isnt there?

    ReplyDelete
  21. To me money is everything until you have it. In todays society if we want to eat, have a place to rest our head, and support the people we love, money is more then just paper... money is a tool of survival. I believe money is the human races only source of Darwinism. If we all supported eachother all the time like in a Marxist society eventually the worlds resources would run out and then we would all be poor and killing each other to survive. But money, it allows the strong, the smart, the rugged and rutheless to survive as they rightfully should. If you find a way to work todays society so that it benifts you, and you end up making an excess of money passed the point of suriviving every day, you deserve to rest your head, put your feet up and enjoy the fruits of YOUR labor. Im sick of people thinking that they are just as entitled to survive as people who actually worked for thier money. there is a reason that Bill gates is a multi-billionaire, there is a reason Lil wayne make millions of dollars off of music, and there is a reason the Sadui oil tycoons have the money they do. The reasons are they worked hard, they pushed themselves to their limits, and they found something that other people want and they provided. If you want that fast car, that big house, and the ability to live out your days enjoying all that life has to offer, you must fight for every penny... you must find that one trait that makes you more valueble then the next guy. The way i see it is we are just a pack of lions; if you allign your self with the right people and work hard to find the best in your self. you will lead the pack and you wont go hungry, but if your lazy you deserve to starve and die just like the stragling lion. The strong survive, the weak die off, this is the way of the world, and if your not willing to fight for your self, what is the purpose of living. and the question when is enough enough? the answer is never, the moment you stop believeing you can be better or do better you become nothing more then a weight dragging down the eveolution of man and nature will get rid of you because there will always be that one driven indivdual that wants what you have and will "one up" you to get there. competition is Human nature and if your not competiting to be the best you better believe someone else will seize the oppertunity to take one more step towards divinty and immortality. Money is the driving factor behind human evolution just like food is the driving factor in the Animal kingdom. And in the end if you fought your way to the top, you deserve to relax and enjoy the benifits of not worring about survivng and focus on connecting yourself to the question that drives us all. "what can i conquer next, the earth? the stars? the heavens?"

  22. i think that material and money is just a statment for the people and world around us to except us and to always prove that we are better. its all a status symbol. wealth to me are the people that i have in my life, the things that i have achieved and that i have done. not money, money to me is pointless to me it has never got me anywhere and i doubt that itll start now. yes we do and it gets worse as time wears on. no not to me, you are successful if you are happy, have a good healthy family and you are healthy but our world today sees it as success and tells everyone else that it is so thats what we aim for is to have alot of money to show that we are successful. yes we are, what we have is never good enough, we always have to have the next best thing.
yes i think certain people do. some people ruin their lives and relationships to have and get more. for me it is yes, but for some its not, it all depeneds on the person and what they want. i dont think that enough is ever enough. and i am not sure if it will ever be. it all depends on the type of person they are and their circumstances.

  23. Wealth makes people feel as if they are better than everyone. It corrupts the world. Those who aren't wealthy wish to be and sometimes think it will make them happy. They are blinded. Sometimes what can make them happy is right in front of them but they miss it because theya re too focused on what material things will make them happy. It's sad to see that the people doing jobs that are so necessary get paid so little. I read in the paper that a homeless shelter food coordinater got paid $15,000. Then right next to her picture there was the founder of Facebook who was said to make 3 billion. It's sad to see that people who do such helpful and great jobs get paid so little, but at least they are happy doing those jobs. Some people that make billions are never happy. Success to some people is how much money you make. I think that's a bad perception. I think success should be measured in how happy you are and if you are living your life to the fullest. It's tough to live in a world so focused on money but if we just focus on what makes us happy we will make it through.

  25. My perception of material goods and wealth is that they are very nice to have and can be enjoyed but they are not necessaties to be happy. To many people wealth is defined by the amount of money they have but to me it's how successful you are and success to me is doing something you love with the people you love. Even though it shouldn't be this way I think that more often then not people see finacial status as a result of your success in life. The majority of people are always wanting more and wanting what they don't have. This can sometimes be a good thing because it can help motivate people to do things. There is no definate definition of what will make everyone content with life or have enough out of life, everyone is different and everyone has different wants, needs and priorities.

  26. Wealth can be seen in many different ways depending on the person/and or situation there in. Wealth can mean big money, but it also can mean wealth of knowledge, happiness ect. Money is way to overrated in our society saying how badly it changes people and the greed and pain that come along with money. Are community has made it apparent that money is what drives us and money is what builds us. Money is the number one thing that drives most citizens, they want to get the new gadget or whatever, but spending their life working for it probably can be bad. Your happiness wouldn’t be reached till you have the material good, which is not something that should be appreciated. Appreciate life always, shouldn’t that be enough wealth. I make min. wage so my financial situation is pretty much non-existent in most cases except basic things in my life. Money corrupts people makes them greedy for it. People get highs off spending money but what is it but a piece of paper with a dead president on it. It means so much to the world but in the end, the person with the most money may not be succeeding when his life wasn’t up to par with the happy guy’s live. Are society will never fade from currency but the values date back to the beginning of America with a way to trade money has grown in fame and will never leave our lives alone. A moneyless world would be something out of this world.

  27. I will start this response with two definitions of wealth. One is defined by Adam Smith whose economic theory of wealth is based on the satisfaction of your job. He believes that you achieve wealth when you are satisfied with your job and are able to provide for yourself. However, the modern capitalistic view of money is much different. Today we know wealth as the amount of money and assets a person has. People have become so concerned with the idea of money that they no longer pursue their dreams, they simply pursue money. I absolutely hate using the word successful for people that have lots of money. I think it is wrong that we judge success in life simply by the amount of assets a person has accumulated throughout the years. I believe success should be a term used only to describe yourself, not others. You, and only you can truly know and judge if you are successful or not based on the actions that you have done and the goals you have had throughout your life. Now we constantly want more. People are no longer pleased with what their lives have to offer. We are constantly seeking more and more material items. We are all susceptible to this “disease.” Even I find myself wanting the newest phone, clothes, or equipment. So why not fight these ideals? Why not change the way we think? Why can we not be satisfied with all that we have? The reason is beyond the nature of humans. Changing our greed to satisfaction sounds good in theory, but our economy depends on our constant want of material items. Without this idea of always buying the newest and best items capitalism could not exist. Money is our curse that we will never escape. Because greed, no matter how bad we may believe it to be, is necessary for the survival of the economy of the United States.
